I spent some time at my father's place outside of Helena, Montana where I got a job at a local radio station. In a matter of weeks, I was able to buy a home on the side of a mountain overlooking the Elkhorn Mountain Range.
I had put down roots!
So it wasn't surprising that one night when I was doing a "remote broadcast" from a local nightclub that a woman, who I worked with at the radio station, introduced me to a man named Bob Baran.
I remember Bob was kind of pre-occupied because he was going to be sitting in with the band. (he plays the sax).
The earth didn't move -- there was no explosion of recognition -- my knees didn't go weak from love at first sight -- but I had just met the man of my dreams -- and didn't know it yet...
He sure didn't look like the guy in my fantasy!
He was nine years older than me -- divorced after 23 years of marriage -- and when I mentioned him to my father -- his reaction was: "I know Bob -- he's fat!"
The reaction I got from the receptionist who had been working at the radio station forever was: "He's a nice guy but always seemed arrogant".
Great! A fat arrogant guy who plays the sax!
To be fair to Bob, my Dad hadn't seen him since he'd lost around 50 pounds.
As it turned out, Bob was also a successful radio producer with his own production company and recording studio -- yeah right here in Helena, Montana. He was producing commercials for the likes of The Kroger Company, and recording a series of segments for National Public Radio's "Weekend Edition". Bob was also a nationally recognized composer -- and one hell of a sax player!
So I did what anyone with major market radio experience would do... I went to see him about getting voiceover work. That's when I walked into Bob's world -- which was unlike anything I had ever encountered before.
