Can I tell you a story first?
When I was in my twenties I had a real passion for massage. One night I was at a Bruce Hornsby and The Range concert and I realized that musicians needed massage too. Now, this is back when massage was still considered "shady". I thought if I could bring the real message of massage to musicians who were in a position to effect public opinion then maybe I could help get massage out of the dark ages.
For two summers in a row I was able to attend the Jazz Trax Festival on Santa Catalina Island. The first one I paid my own way and met Art Good and the other people in charge. The second summer I was invited back to do my "Massage on the Spot" backstage as their official massage therapist.
I believe this was the summer of 1989. It was very near the inception of Art Good's Jazz Trax Festival held in the Avalon Ballroom which began in 1987.
In this photo, I am with Keiko Matsui and that's David Benoit and his wife next to us. Both Keiko and David gave fabulous performances at the Festival that year. I was living my dream life!
Here I am with one of my favorite people from that time. One I wish I had stayed in touch with... the late great Carl Anderson. He was one of the most amazing Jazz vocalists I have ever heard. He used his voice like it was a musical instrument... And he was a warm wonderful person as well. He is probably best known for his role as Judas in the original "Jesus Christ, Superstar".
It was an amazing time. I went places and did things others have only dreamed of because I was following my passion to bring stress relief to musicians through massage.
When I was a massage therapist backstage at one of the premiere Southern California music venues, life was very exciting and I had the chance to met a lot of talented and famous people.
Such as, Debrah Harry of Blondie, who was into exercise, a healthy diet and looked at least 10 years younger than her age... She sure could rock!
I met Chris Isaak who wasn't interested in massage. But his drummer, Kenney Dale Johnson was.
I also interacted with The Neville Brothers, Clarence Clemons of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, Russ Freeman and the Ripingtons and the original members of Acoustic Alchemy.
There were so many wonderful people I met during that time when I was doing massage for musicians. The experience was transformational and I was able to achieve my mission in life. "Be able to create positive change in the lives that I touch." Have you ever seen the difference in someone's face after they have received a massage? It was rewarding, but for some reason there was still something missing.
Do you feel that way? Even if you think you are in the right place and doing the right thing in your life, somehow there is this part of you that is still seeking "Something more".
I thought I was living my dream life. Here I was working backstage, meeting all these famous people, being able to experience some really great music and I was making good money. But I found myself on the road for far too many hours. Stuck in traffic and there was an emptiness that was driving me on.
One day I had an epiphany, I could reach many more people and touch them with the healing power of my voice. So I left Southern California and headed back North. There I began a radio broadcasting career which enabled me to meet many more influential musical talents. Faith Hill, who I joined for breakfast one morning before the world knew her as just, "Faith". Other artists I had the pleasure of meeting included Travis Tritt, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Dan Seals and the man who inspired me to do massage for musicians, Bruce Hornsby.
During my time in Portland as a radio DJ, I discovered several self help techniques that assisted in my personal growth and pointed me in yet another direction.
Has this happened to you? You find a clue here, a technique there and your life seems better for awhile. Maybe that's just what life is about... getting glimmers here and there of how your life could be. The dream life... that illusive goal... It brings to mind the question:

Since Portland my life has changed drastically. I moved back to Montana, where I was born, and met the man of my dreams. A man I could grow with... And I don't just mean my waistline, though there's been some of that too. I mean personal growth, growing together and growing as evolving human beings.
We combined our knowledge of what worked for each other... And the next thing we know we have a dream home, a fabulous recording studio and a record label. Did I mention that the man of my dreams is a musician? Go figure! ...And next is a CD on the Grammy ballot. Wow! What made all this happen for us? We were floored! ...And incredibly grateful.
